Datelined ‘Greenwall’, St David’s, 12th May 1798 and clearly inscribed per packet the opening lines mention that the Captain of the Portland packet gave the writer doubt as to the safety of an earlier letter, so you get a copy of those contents dated 20th November 1797. Fine straight line ‘JAMAICA’ on back and seemingly sent at a rate of 5/8 to London. Further research could be rewarding.

Duplicate letter datelined Jamaica 25th April 1798 to London rated 3/4 double rate and inscribed ‘p HM Cutter William Pitt’. London arrival d/stamp 3 July 98.

The next instance was in July 1800 when this letter inscribed ‘P Sprightly cutter’ was sent to London. The letter is datelined St Mary’s Jamaica July 16th 1800. The reverse has a poor strike of the Jamaica Freeling datestamp of 3 AUG 1800 and a fine London arrival d/stamp of SEP 21 1800.

In August 1810 HM Brig Crocus was pressed into the packet service and took this letter to London for 2/1. The letter opened up to show an average strike of a Jamaica fleuron 21 AUG. Foster only lists one example carried by this service and this may be it, also ex L P Voller. London arrival 21 OC 1810 and with £2 4 10 inscribed in two places, we leave to you to decipher

The final cover in this group is dated 23 April 1813 and shows some signs of wear, optimistically inscribed ‘single’ it was charged 4/4 and the inion ‘By Pelican Sloop of War’; Foster reported no known letters on this vessel, the commander of which was paid 50 guineas by the Post Office as a reward for bringing the mail through following a famous engagement with the American brig Argus. Weak Jamaica fleuron on reverse along with 4 JU 1813 London arrival. Value is added by a faint ‘MORANT BAY/JA’ also on the reverse
