First a cover from Nicaragua to Grenada sent 24 April 1940 and transited Jamaica and then Antigua on 2 May when the S1a handstamp of Censor 3 was applied (ANTIGUA PASSED BY CENSOR ‘3’ double ring). The second item is incoming from Malta to Antigua, surface mail rate 2½d, sent 5 March 1945, opened and resealed by censor DD/31 and reached Bessie Harper nine weeks later

25 £ 25 link Antigua S3a handstamp ‘Crown Passed Code B/100’ manuscript 4 applied 25 Feb 1943 on letter from Curacao to St Kitts; with it we pair a cover from Dominica to New York, sent by airmail for 1s 2d on 21 DE 42 and so transited Antigua where it was opened and resealed with L2 tape by Examiner B/112 with manuscript 3 in blue

Bahamas The next seven lots feature mint blocks from the 1921-1937 issue; most display gum toning and some perf splits – excellent study material

Finally comes a less glossy version, posted from PAGET (1961 we judge from its 1½d stamp) to a lady in Massachusetts, who may not have appreciated that M. Anderson was greeting all the girls (our emphasis). We doubt that a fairy tale ensued

The later cover is quite a twee small size, to a Fleet St address, a normal and harmonious 3d and 1½d sharing the cost of travel. Fine straight line ‘JAMAICA’ on back and seemingly sent at a rate of 5/8 to London. Further research could be rewarding.
Jamaica In the June 2008 issue of the BWISC Bulletin (see our website) our vendor wrote a four page article on the use of naval brigs as substitutes for the regular packets which were disrupted by the Napoleonic wars. They can be distinguished from ship letters carried by a naval vessel by the rate. These letters are scarce and the next five lots are written up

Even Brian Brooks doesn’t seem to have one of these – so we can say scarce maybe philatelic or just possibly indicating use as a parcel card

The first has 12 examples of the 1½d WAR STAMP (SG23) and includes a block of four and strip of five in the 1s 6d rate sending an OHMS envelope in SP 1919; the second is a piece of card with handstamp ‘POSTMASTER/ST.KITTS.’ with blue regn crayon and a block of 20 of SG23 which must be a contender for the largest used multiple – 2s 6d the rate on JY 29 18. Even better on the reverse is stuck the despatch label for 500 sheets of 120 set of the ½d duty from requisition 62/17 and with the signature of L Scott, Crown Agents Inspector, a very rare survivor

Edgar Calvert: April 10 1922 registered from Argentina for 24 centavos; 12 NO 1922 from Chile for 80 centavos then forwarded to St Eustatius; 29 Jun 1927 from Argentina, now 36 centavos to St Eustatius but then forwarded to England. This may be the same Minister who was based in Alderney when under German Occupation in WWII. Further research may be rewarding

The neat pencil notes on the back state that HMW Rambler was in Port of Spain from 10-14 March 1898 which would fit in with the Shepherds Bush arrival d/stamp of AP 1 98 – so this is at a concessionary rate prior to the introduction of the Imperial Penny Post at Christmas that year. As Ron Wike recorded for us, the Barbados government honoured and respected its contract for KLM to carry mails between the two islands, which made commercial development awkward for NYRBA and the soon-to-emerge BWIA in this part of the Caribbean
481 £ 20 link Trinidad Wike (p71) reports on a KLM proving flight from Trinidad 15 Dec 1939 to Ciudad Bolivar and says mail was carried without a cachet. This cover seems to have gone on that flight for 20c, clearly typed instruction ‘First air mail service Trinidad – Ciudad Bolivar by K.L.M. – Royal Dutch Airlines’. Not illustrated by Wike and on KLM stationery this may be missing from many collections, fine KLM air Mail etiquette too. The service ran weekly until the occupation of Holland in May 1940 and never resumed

Handstamped with small A.V. 2 in circle (probably ERD for Proud AM21). A scarce combination of postage and AV2 marking to a rare destination.
