The wartime Postal Surcharge order of 1940 added ¼d to the printed matter rate sent overseas. Very few examples have been reported and those mostly from the Surbrook missionary correspondence. This example to Miss Mollie Norton in Chicago was sent 15 September 1950 paid with a vertical strip of three ¼d stamps by J L Davey in Roseau. The only question mark is why the envelope is now stuck down – did it contravene the ‘unsealed’ requirement to use the printed matter rate or has it subsequently got stuck? - Est: £50Lot 293
The wartime Postal Surcharge lasted until 1952 and the decimal currency era making ¼d become ½c. The discovery copy of this rate in the decimal era was a Christmas card sent in 1951 to the Elvin family in Brooklyn. Now a second envelope, sent unsealed, from the same correspondence can be offered, sent 8 Dec 1951 paid with a vertical strip of three ½c stamps. - Est: £80Lot 294
