    Interesting 1848 cover from Montserrat to Madeira, with an, in places, albino impression of the Montserrat double arc date stamp. On arrival in London it attracted the boxed ‘detained for postage’ hand stamp and did not reach Madeira until December, 160 Reis due. An early use of the new date stamp sent late 1847 - Est: £105

    Perhaps fortunately, Montserrat was the only British Caribbean territory to fall for the De Landre Red Cross scam. De Landre, pseudonym of Gaston Fontanille, was arrested in June 1917 but not before he had produced these 1d + 1d French Red Cross labels, trading off the desire to raise funds for the Red Cross worldwide. Here we offer an attractive block of four with register marks in the right hand margin - Est: £75
